MAIN THEME

Above all else, throughout Exodus, God aims to display his own glory. Everything in Exodus is about God establishing His own fame. Pastor and scholar Phil Ryken observes: “The book of Exodus is so rich that it is hard to reduce it to a single theme or emphasis. Different commentators have made various suggestions about what ties the whole book together, and some have doubted where there is anything to unify the book at all. However, the theme of Exodus is very simple – so simple it can be expressed in four short words: saved for God’s glory.”

THE STORY OF EXODUS

Exodus tells the story of Israel’s deliverance from slavery to Pharaoh to its dedicated to service to God; of how God establishes for Himself a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a people for his own possession, who will proclaim the excellencies of Him who delivered them from bondage, through a savior.

The story revolves around three major activities:

  1. Deliverance: God delivers His people out from the house of slavery.
  2. Covenant/Law: God establishes a special relationship with His people, which governs the way they relate to Him and others.
  3. Tabernacle: God dwells with His people.

In their Introduction to the Old Testament, Longman & Dillard note: “The three events – exodus, law, and tabernacle – emphasize one important truth: God is present with Israel as its Savior and King.”

THE MESSAGE OF EXODUS

The book of Exodus was originally written to celebrate God’s glorious and gracious deliverance of His chosen people Israel from Egyptian slavery to the freedom of covenant relationship and fellowship with Him.

Likewise, the book of Exodus leads Christians today to celebrate God’s glorious and gracious deliverance of His chosen people from slavery to the freedom of covenant relationship and fellowship with Him.

This message highlights the following themes:

  • Celebration
  • God’s glory
  • God’s grace
  • Deliverance
  • Identity as God’s chosen people
  • Slavery
  • Freedom
  • Covenant relationship
  • God’s fellowship/presence

What happened to the Israelites in the book of Exodus happened as an example for us and was written down for our instruction (1 Cor. 10:11). As such, we will encounter a number of practical topics for our careful consideration and appropriate application.

For example:

  • Taking care of the unborn
  • Racism and murder
  • The subject of slavery
  • How God uses weak, ordinary people
  • The importance of proper worship
  • The nature of true community
  • Relying on God’s presence
  • The need to take counsel
  • The significance of obedience
  • The issue of idolatry

THE EXODUS AND THE GOSPEL

Many commentators has pointed out that the exodus was the most important salvation event of the Old Testament. Moreover, as Christopher Wright has noted, “it is the exodus that provides the primary model of God’s idea of redemption, not just in the Old Testament but even in the New, where it is used as one of the keys to understanding the meaning of the cross of Christ.”

Examples includes: Moses as a type of Jesus; Israel as type of Jesus; Jesus spoke of his death and resurrection as His “departure” (literally: “exodus” – Lk. 9:30-31); Jesus was crucified at Passover as the Passover lamb (Jn. 1:29; 1 Cor. 5:7); and many of the Old Testament words used to describe the exodus from Egypt – such as ransom, redemption, and deliverance – are the same words used in the New Testament to describe Christ’s saving work on the cross.
